Nollywood gets an Online Boost

African News: Dictator Billions, Global Nollywood and Underwater Suites

It is one of the world’s most vibrant and largest movie industries, yet it can be quite tricky to access Nigeria’s film productions, broadly known as Nollywood. This is particularly true in Europe, which is home to a large part of the Nigerian diaspora, and has led a Nigerian living in the U.K. to create iROKOtv, a startup that is bringing the Nollywood experience to anyone online. Though it was launched three years ago, Reuters reports that this past week the company announced it has attracted the attention of U.S. venture capitalists and secured $13 million in investments. This will help boost what is a unique service: iROKOtv caters to over a million people across 178 countries accessing its catalogue of more than 5,000 movies.
